Ticking boxes and wasting valuable resources

This morning I got a data protection letter from ngage solutions limited who now provide mail shot and national news distribution services on behalf of Business Link… they were formally known as Business Link Solutions based in Thame, Oxfordshire.
The letter was addressed to someone whose details had been published on our website but who never resided here and in fact was one of a number of people who failed to pay us for our services over time. Our association was around 5 years ago !!! The letter is a data protection one advising of the changes in Business Link. A number of separate entities are becoming one … they were not asking people to do anything but it just said we have to do this because the rules say so. But don’t the rules also advise that data is out of date if it hasn’t been contacted in the last six months or so … this data is completely wrong and over 5 years old … way out of date and so should have been deleted off the database 4 years ago. Anyone who works a database knows that people move around all the time and that say 10 - 20% will change in a single year … so nearer 70 - 80% in 5 years. Ironically I haven’t had a letter telling me that my data is changing hands ! Please stop wasting our resources needlessly and breaking your own rules ! Yet another tick box exercise which is not productive as they will simply keep the data as they have now “touched” the individual by posting a letter … what rot. So please tell me what I then say to the bloke who emails me at an address I never gave out ? Technically he doesn’t have my opt-in but assumes it OK because the government does it … I have no recourse except hitting block on my spam filter, to think of him negatively as a spammer when if I bump into him elsewhere and figure there is no point in rules if there is no-one policing or enforcing them … and if the rule makers don’t really care then who should? Me, I just think it simply polite to ask… |
