Nestle to use Certified Sustainable Palm Oil by 2015
Nestle and Unilever are two major corporate that have stated they will be looking to use Certified Sustainable Palm Oil by 2015 and put in processes to eliminate “problem” sources. It has been demonstrated that companies that focus on their social responsibilities are better thought of by employees and shareholders alike ... plus there are laws that require them to say exactly what they are doing around the world to ensure the sustainability of their business practices. When I read a story this afternoon about Nestle catching a cold on their Facebook site I had to go and do a bit of an investigation ... I worked for Nestle as a trainee rep back in the mid-80’s and so for me I have fond memories of how they treated me, which was very well indeed. So when an old mate starts to get a slap from the green mob (with whom I share a bunch of beliefs) I naturally am forced to come to their defence. But first I need to know what the story is... sounds like an internal blogger got carried away defending their position, using language of someone passionate about the company they work for and deleting blogs that carried images that were breaching copyright ... So what’s wrong with that??? See SKY post below for details of how it began ... I get passionate about what I believe in and I personally think that actually more people end up respecting you for it but will probably stand back and say nothing, being one of the 80% of what Microsoft call lurkers, people who just watch what is going on without adding any value to the conversation. The one’s that will shout are those who are bating for the opposition ... To find out more about this story I’m clicking on a bunch of links from Twitter and being taken to pages created by Social Media gurus with key word rich articles saying how Nestle have got it wrong by not responding to every post ... Do you know what, I really hate reading blogs where after someone makes a comment the same person jumps in to respond and address them individually? I’d much rather read say 10 points and then a fresh point added by the host, it reads so much better and people still feel engaged. Do people really want to be patronised by flannel ??? Take a look at the links below and make your own mind up ... Nestle have done a brilliant job of responding to this ... they have refined their supply chain already and appear to have a strong community strategy moving forward ... good work. Prove your case by walking the walk ... ensure you are doing the best you can for the communities in which you do business by implementing programmes for the longer term and not quick knee jerk reactions to appease a few ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palm_oil http://news.sky.com http://www.guardian.co.uk http://www.greenpeace.org.uk http://www.nestle.com http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Label-Palm-Oil/ |
