Google Challenges Microsoft with Online Word Processor
Whilst Microsoft plan to sink their teeth into the search market, Google rise to the challenge by encouraging PC users away from traditional Microsoft Office software. With the introduction of web-based word processor ‘Writely’, Google hope to entice users to move their work online.
At the same time as Microsoft plans to take over Google’s search market, Google is busy building up services to compete with Microsoft. In essence Google is trying to move as much of your work as possible online, away from the Microsoft Windows environment.
Google offerings now include such goodies as online photo editing, blogging services, discussion forums, and document management – many of which compete with traditional Microsoft software packages and online services. There is also a move towards replacing the familiar Windows desktop with a Google alternative.
Key to Google’s approach is that all these features are web-based which means you can access your work from any computer in the world that has internet access, provided you remember your Google ID. It’s clear that this method could potentially unlock users from their Windows-based computers.
Despite this, Microsoft Office and its related tools have long been regarded as THE standard software package for all word processing and general office needs. A hard act to follow. Which is perhaps why Google, rather than launch a direct competitor to Microsoft Office, have chosen to go down the ‘online’ route instead. With this aim in mind, the company have bought Writely, a web-based system that allows users to save and share their documents online.
Currently in Beta mode, Writely is sensibly ‘word’ compatible so users can easily upload their existing documents to the system. It will also accept other common formats such as PFD and HTML which of course means users can still interact with colleagues who prefer the Microsoft way.
