Small Firms Best at Flexible Working
Small Firms Best at Flexible Working

Smaller firms are better at implementing flexible working arrangements than larger organizations according to research carried out by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). Their report – ‘Flexible Working: Good Business’ – highlighted the positive aspects of flexible working for employers and employees alike.

The results contradict the common belief that only larger organizations have the infrastructure to support flexible working arrangements for their staff. The report, based on a study of five small UK firms, concludes that flexible working has a positive effect on employee morale, reduces stress levels, and raises the employer’s reputation – all of which has a positive effect on bottom line performance.

Researchers interviewed staff and management from 5 companies based throughout the UK, reinforcing earlier studies which concluded flexible working represents a winning formula for employer and employee. One of the biggest benefits is the reduced stress for employees struggling to maintain a healthy work/life balance.

Geoff Armstrong, CIPD Director General, commented: “Our tight labour market has created intense competition for talented and motivated people, and this has been helped by the informal and flexible nature of flexible working arrangements that help meet the needs of both employers and employees. Employees who feel able to balance their lives in and outside work are much more likely to go that extra mile as their part of the bargain.”

Flexible working arrangements are being offered by more and more employers, a trend backed up by another recent survey by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) – Work and Life: How business is striking the right balance. Findings indicated that businesses are operating flexibly by offering part-time hours (72% of respondents), flexible working hours (69%), and the opportunity to work from home (38%).
