Yell let their people do the walking

Reading-based Yell, publisher of the Yellow Pages, has announced plans to slash 1,300 jobs in 2009. In a bid to make £100m-worth of savings before March 2010, the Berkshire employer is set to see 350 redundancies out of its 3,860 UK workforce. Yell has two main Berkshire sites, in Reading and Slough, and both are set to be hit by the proposals.

The job cuts will be effect all major divisions at Yell and will involve management roles. The sales force is set to be one of the hardest hit, whilst administrative roles will also be reduced. The losses mark the second major cost-cutting exercise at the company in just over 12 months.

Yell's CEO, John Condron, said the job cuts were being made in the face of tough trading conditions, adding, "While job losses are always a last resort, The Communication Workers' Union and Yell are jointly committed to achieving these job reductions by the use of the recently agreed restructuring policy which emphasises the use of voluntary redundancy and redeployment."

The announcement comes as Yell reported a 6% rise in half-year revenues to £1.03bn and pre-tax profits of £118.3m.
