John Lewis reports droves of last-minute men

Sunday 21 December 2008

On the last shopping weekend before Christmas, John Lewis has reported that men have, in true last-minute style, been hitting the shops in full force. The leading department store group has noted strong sales in traditional gifts men give the women in their lives, such as fragrance and lingerie, over the last seven days. Gaming, technology and personal care also sold exceptional well as did large televisions.

John Lewis has also seen an increase of 1.3 per cent week-on-week and sales finished at -1.8 per cent compared with last year. johnlewis.com continued to contribute to these strong sales figures.

The department store group also predicts that tomorrow (Monday 22 December) will be a particularly busy day in its stores. Having reviewed Christmas trading information from past years, John Lewis has observed that the last time Christmas Day fell on a Thursday (2003), the Monday before was incredibly busy in its shops.

Patrick Lewis, John Lewis Director of Retail Operations, says: 'We are now into the final run-up to Christmas and expect the last few days to be busy ones. We anticipate sales will continue to be fuelled by 'last-minute' gift items such as fragrance and toiletries gift sets. Our well-known and trusted price promise means shoppers can be sure they are getting the best value on these items.'

To check opening hours for John Lewis branches on Christmas Eve please go to johnlewis.com (www.johnlewis.com). John Lewis Clearance starts on Saturday 27 December in shops (except Trafford which starts on 26 December) and at 6pm on Christmas Eve online.
